San Juan Mountain Waterfall Elopement | Silverton, Colorado

A Rainy San Juan Mountain Elopement Near Silverton, Colorado

Gretchen and Zach chose the San Juan Mountains near Silverton, Colorado for their waterfall elopement, and the moody weather that greeted us only added to the magic of their day. Some couples hope for sunshine, but these two embraced every raindrop and misty mountain peak that came their way.

A Cozy Morning Start

Their day started in the coziest way possible—cooking breakfast together while listening to the rain drum against the windows. There’s something intimate about those quiet morning moments, just the two of them in their space before the adventure began. While Zach finished up in the kitchen, Gretchen got ready and put on the jewelry she had made herself. As a silversmith, she’d crafted a turquoise necklace and bracelet specifically for this day. I loved watching her put on pieces that held so much personal meaning—her own hands had shaped the metal and set the stones that would be in all of her wedding photos.

First Look Under the Trees

When it was time for their first look, the rain was still falling. We found shelter under the trees and pulled out an umbrella, and honestly, the soft gray light filtering through the forest was absolutely stunning. The way they looked at each other in that moment—full of excitement and tenderness—showed they were ready for anything this day would bring.

Vows at a Gushing Waterfall

We hopped in the car and made our way up the Million Dollar Highway toward Red Mountain Pass, one of Colorado’s most scenic drives and one of the best locations for a San Juan Mountains elopement. Our destination was a waterfall, and with all the recent rain, it was absolutely gushing. The power of the water was incredible, thundering down the mountainside in a way that made your heart race. It was the perfect dramatic backdrop for their vows. Standing there with the mist swirling around them and the waterfall roaring behind, Gretchen and Zach exchanged the promises they’d been waiting to say.

For their ring exchange, we moved into the shelter of the forest near the river. The sound of rushing water was still present but gentler here, and the trees offered protection from the rain. It felt like the forest was holding space for this sacred moment between them.

Exploring a Moody Alpine Lake

After they were officially married, we explored our way to a nearby lake. The atmosphere was absolutely moody and magical—mountain peaks disappeared into dramatic clouds, autumn colors glowed through the mist, and the lake reflected the silver sky. We crossed the bridge and wandered, taking in the raw beauty of the San Juans in the rain. There’s something about weather like this that makes everything feel more intimate and present. You’re not distracted by trying to find the perfect light or worrying about logistics—you’re just there, experiencing it all together.

Dessert by the Lake and Signing the License

As evening approached, we made our way back to their car for one of my favorite parts of the day. They’d brought dessert, and they sat in the back of their car by the lake, sharing sweets and soaking in the moment. There’s something so beautifully simple about ending an elopement day this way—no rush, no formality, just the two of them enjoying something delicious after an incredible day.

By lamplight, they signed their marriage license, making it all official. The warm glow of the lamp in the growing darkness felt like the perfect symbol for what they’d created together—their own light, no matter what weather or circumstances surrounded them. We finished the day with kisses, laughter, and the kind of contentment that comes from a day perfectly lived.

Embracing the Rain

Gretchen and Zach’s elopement was a reminder that the “imperfect” weather days are often the most memorable ones. The rain didn’t ruin anything—it made their day uniquely theirs, full of atmosphere and moments they’ll never forget. I can’t thank these two enough for trusting the process and embracing the moody magic of the San Juans.
